Films!

We know Edible San Antonio is a foodie magazine, but we love films too and for years we’ve screened and critiqued movies in print and online. So in our fair city, EdibleSanAntonio.com comes with a bonus: “Films! At the movies with Covo & Covo” – a tab dedicated to reviews of the latest feature films, the brightest indies and gems from local film festivals. In the print edition we will focus on films related to food, but every week, you can also turn to  EdibleSA.com to find out what’s hot and what’s not at the local megaplex — and which movies deserve your time and hard-earned dollars!

“American Hustle” is this weekend’s must-see film …. Five Stars!

The “Silver Linings Playbook” dream team is back with actors Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence and director David O. Russell. Audiences even get a bonus scene with actor Robert DeNiro, whose appearance is brief but brilliant.

An FBI agent (Cooper) manages to ensnare a savvy conman (Bale) and uses him to fry bigger fish. What ensues touches off a sequence of events that gives the audience a chance to get to know the characters, dip a toe back into an ocean of  70’s attitudes, looks and music, and generally escape into the world of the American hustle for a short while.

And one magnificent hustle after another, every member of the cast gives a stellar signature performance. A terrific music score underscores the period piece and except for just a lapse or two in the costuming, the filmmaker hits the mark in every way. The story is well told, the humor is timed perfectly and delivered superbly, the drama is poignant and the situations outrageous.

Viewers will also enjoy a couple of great shots of New York City from a New Yorker’s perspective.

Ultimately, the film rates five stars out of five stars because O. Russell lets the story unfold and develop to a perfect pitch. Above all, we love a film that tells a story with characters that are memorable … and in that regard as well,  “American Hustle” can claim mission accomplished.

We strongly recommend this film. There is no question in our minds that audiences will leave the theater feeling entertained and satisfied. Russell manages to deliver  another refreshing film that’s simply worth your time. The bottom line: “American Hustle” is funny, smart and enjoyable to watch. More than that, this film, with its incredibly satisfying performances, is certain to be an Oscar contender and we predict it will break box office records. We rate “American Hustle” an instant classic with five stars, and this truly is one not to miss.

Please note that while we love this movie, this film is definitely for mature audiences … think dinner (LOCAL, please) and a movie — the perfect break from all the holiday hustle and bustle. You’ll feel like your money was well spent.  “American Hustle” opens nationwide today, Dec. 20, runs about 138 minutes and is rated R.
